Gas prices in gwei don't tell you much. What you want to know is what a send or a swap will cost in dollars, and whether another chain is cheaper right now. One call answers both, for $0.002.

How to read Base gas fees

Base is an Ethereum layer 2, so a transaction pays two things: a tiny execution fee on Base itself (quoted in gwei, often a small fraction of one) and a data fee for posting the transaction to Ethereum. The data fee usually dominates when Ethereum is busy.

A plain ETH send uses the least gas, a token transfer about three times as much, and a swap more again, depending on the route. That's why our answer gives the dollar cost of all three rather than one gwei number.

Slow / standard / fast: the fee rates for getting in the next few blocks, from patient to urgent.
Congestion and trend: whether the network is quiet or busy, and whether fees are rising or falling.
Cheapest chain now: the lowest-cost chain for a send and for a swap across all the chains checked.

Questions people ask

Why is Base so much cheaper than Ethereum?

Base batches many transactions and posts them to Ethereum together, so each one pays a small share of the Ethereum cost. When Ethereum itself is busy, Base's data fee rises too.

Does the Base cost include the L1 data fee?

The answer notes when a layer-2 figure excludes the small L1 data fee, so you know what is and isn't counted.
