What to compare
- Input and output price per million tokens. Output usually costs several times more than input, so a chatty task costs more than a reading task.
- Cached-input price: much cheaper when you send the same long prompt again and again.
- Context length and max output: how much the model can read and write in one call.
- Features: tools (function calling), JSON output, reasoning, vision, audio and files. A cheap model is no use if it can't do what you need.

To browse and filter yourself, the model list ($0.003) filters by provider, features, minimum context and maximum price, and sorts by price, context or newest.
- Describe the job. For example "extract invoice fields from scanned PDFs into JSON, about 3,000 tokens in and 400 out".
- Choose a quality level. Budget, balanced or best.
- Compare the shortlist. Check the cost per 1,000 calls against how often you'll run it, then test the top two on your own data.

Where do the prices come from?
OpenRouter's public model list, which tracks the list prices of the major providers; we refresh it every 15 minutes. Your own provider contract may differ.
Does it include free models?
Yes, models offered free are marked as free; they often have tight rate limits.
How is the cost per call estimated?
Your input and output token counts times each model's listed prices. Real usage varies with prompt length and how much the model writes.
How much does it cost?
$0.003 for the model list and $0.01 for the picker, charged only when the call succeeds. In Claude or Cursor the first 20 calls a day are free.
