A single mistyped character in an IBAN can send a payment astray or get it bounced days later. One call checks the format and the check digits, and splits out the bank code, branch and account number, for $0.001.

What it checks
- Check digits: the two digits after the country code catch almost every typing mistake (the mod-97 check).
- Length: each country's IBANs have a fixed length; a missing or extra character is caught.
- SEPA: whether the country is in the Single Euro Payments Area.
- The parts: bank code, branch code and account number (for UK IBANs, the sort code and account number).
What it can't tell you
A valid IBAN only means it is well formed. It can't confirm the account exists, is open, or belongs to the person or company you expect. For that, use your bank's payee check (Confirmation of Payee in the UK). If an invoice's bank details changed unexpectedly, confirm them by phone with a number you already trust.
Checking the business too
Before paying a new supplier, check their VAT number and the company behind their website.

Does it contact the bank?
No. The check is computed from the IBAN itself and the official format for its country, so it is instant and works for any bank.
Does it cover every country?
Every country in the SWIFT IBAN registry, with its official length.
Can it catch a fraudster's IBAN?
No. A fraudster's IBAN is usually perfectly valid. The check catches typing mistakes, not fraud.
How much does it cost?
